Are you a youth-led, impact-driven founder or an innovative MSME owner operating in Tanzania? Do you have a product or service with clear market traction but find yourself trapped in the “missing middle”—struggling to secure the patient capital and strategic support needed to become truly investment-ready? Your breakthrough platform has arrived.
Applications are now formally open for the Fifth Call for Funding Applications under the UNDP’s FUNGUO Innovation Programme. This flagship catalytic intervention is designed to fortify Tanzania’s local startup ecosystem. Implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Tanzania in active partnership with local Enterprise Support Organizations (ESOs), this initiative is co-funded by the European Union, the British Government (FCDO), and the Republic of Finland.
Why It Matters
Tanzania boasts a highly creative generation of young entrepreneurs, yet a critical structural gap persists in the local business lifecycle. Once a startup advances past the initial ideation and prototype phase, it enters the “missing middle”. At this stage, ventures are too large for micro-loans but still considered too risky for conventional commercial banks or international venture capital firms. Without flexible, non-dilutive capital, many high-potential businesses stall out.
The FUNGUO Innovation Programme matters because it directly targets this funding chasm. By deploying performance-based catalytic grants alongside rigorous business development training, FUNGUO de-risks early-stage enterprises. This approach bridges the structural gap, turning raw local solutions into scalable, investment-ready entities. This doesn’t just expand individual businesses; it actively accelerates sustainable livelihoods, addresses youth unemployment, drives climate action, and builds the long-term socioeconomic resilience of the country.
Core Innovation Framework
The Fifth Call seeks early- and growth-stage Tanzanian enterprises that demonstrate profound innovation in their products, services, corporate processes, or core business models. Submissions must show a clear, measurable potential for impact across these vital development domains:

Environmental Responsibility: Active alignment with climate action and sustainable green livelihoods.
Technology: Digital transformation and tech-driven efficiency.
