A hazardous materials unit remains at a business in Auckland’s Newmarket after reports of a toxic gas smell.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) said crews from Remuera, Auckland City, Parnell, Grey Lynn, Onehunga and Balmoral were called to Eden Street about midday.
The incident was inside a two-storey commercial building covering about 300 square metres.
Firefighters removed a car battery that was emitting hydrogen gas and are continuing to ensure the building is safe.
An ambulance was called after a member of the public felt unwell, but the person later transported themselves to hospital.
Hato Hone St John has been asked to remain on site to monitor staff.
St John said crews transported two patients in a moderate condition to Auckland City Hospital.
