‘Where the World Breaks’ opens June 6
FERNDALE — A new exhibition is coming to Sophia Grace Gallery and will kick off with an opening reception on June 6.
Titled “Where the World Breaks”, this exhibition features works from Michel Angela Peterson, He Gong and Pacific Northwest artists Tom Sherwood, Tom Wood, John Cole and Kenneth Callahan.
According to a newsletter, at the heart of the exhibit is the connection between Tom Sherwood and He Gong, who met in China during the late 1980s.
“Their relationship reveals an often-overlooked aspect of Pacific Northwest mysticism: its deep engagement with Eastern philosophies and natural metaphysics. ‘Where the World Breaks’ bring this hidden lineage into view, connecting artistic traditions across generations, cultures and continents,” the newsletter states.
The exhibition seeks to ask people to wonder the question of if art can continue to hold together what the world no longer can as it explores a shared human experience that seems to be fracturing.
At the opening reception He Gong will fly in from China and be presented with “Edgeworks”, a volume of ekphrastic poetry published by Igneus Press and written by Whatcom County poets based on He Gong’s Maps of No Return exhibition in 2025.
The reception kicks off June 6 at 5 p.m. at Sophia Grace Gallery, 2026 Main Street, Suite B. The exhibition will run through Aug. 29.
