BMW Group will expand its high-performance compact sports car lineup in August 2026 with the production launch of the new BMW M2 equipped with the M xDrive all-wheel-drive system. Manufactured at the BMW Group Plant San Luis Potosi in Mexico, the updated model introduces all-wheel drive to the M2 nameplate for the first time. The vehicle is scheduled for an global market rollout in late summer 2026, targeting key export markets including the United States, Germany, and China, alongside a launch in Ireland, where pricing will start at €126,175 (US$146,331) on-the-road (OTR).

The production expansion follows a period of strong commercial performance for the model line. According to company data, the BMW M2 Coupé was BMW M GmbH’s best-selling high-performance vehicle in 2025.

All-Wheel-Drive M2Powertrain and Engine Architecture

The vehicle is powered by a 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine featuring BMW M TwinPower Turbo technology, producing 353 kW (480 hp). Power is delivered through a standard M Steptronic transmission equipped with Drivelogic control technology.

The powertrain incorporates a newly patented pre-chamber combustion system known as BMW M Ignite technology. Derived from motorsport applications, the technology will be introduced across all BMW M straight-six engines beginning in mid-2026. According to BMW, the system is designed to improve efficiency under high-load conditions, such as track driving, while helping meet the requirements of the upcoming EU7 emissions standard.

Under the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP), combined fuel consumption for the M2 M xDrive is rated between 8.4 and 10.4 liters per 100 kilometers, depending on configuration. Combined CO₂ emissions range from 233 to 235 grams per kilometer, placing the vehicle in the EU’s CO₂ efficiency class G.

Drivetrain Mechanics and Dynamics

The centerpiece of the technical update is an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch integrated into the transfer case, enabling variable torque distribution between the front and rear axles.

The system maintains a rear-wheel-drive bias under normal driving conditions, directing all available engine torque to the rear axle. The front axle engages only when additional traction is required.

BMW said the system is managed by a model-specific control unit with integrated wheel-slip limitation, allowing rapid responses to changing traction conditions without relying solely on the central Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system.

The all-wheel-drive system operates in conjunction with several performance-oriented chassis technologies, including:

Drivers can customize drivetrain behavior through the onboard M Setup menu. The system also features a dedicated 2WD mode, which deactivates DSC intervention and directs power exclusively to the rear axle, replicating the handling characteristics of a traditional rear-wheel-drive sports car.

Performance and Chassis Specifications

The addition of the M xDrive system improves the vehicle’s acceleration performance. The M2 with M xDrive accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.7 seconds, 0.3 seconds faster than the rear-wheel-drive version.

The vehicle reaches 200 km/h from a standstill in 12.8 seconds, while acceleration from 80 to 120 km/h is completed in 3.7 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 249 km/h, although this can be increased to 285 km/h with the optional M Driver’s Package.

Road contact is managed through staggered M light-alloy wheels measuring 19 inches at the front and 20 inches at the rear. Track-focused tires are available as an option. Braking duties are handled by standard M Compound brakes, featuring six-piston fixed calipers at the front and single-piston calipers at the rear.
