#3. Tupou Vaa’i

Summary: Vaa’i’s physical presence was neutralised by Salakaia-Loto, limiting his impact with ball in hand. While defensively solid and effective at the breakdown, he lacked influence in attack and failed to dominate the way the All Blacks need from their lock pairing. His performance will need improvement to keep his starting place.

The Post 5/10: “Neither of the All Blacks starting locks could match the physical presence of the Wallabies’ Lukhan Salakaia-Loto with ball in hand. Vaa’i made only two metres on the carry, although he won two breakdown turnovers. Replaced by Patrick Tuipulotu after 51 minutes.”

RUCK 5.5/10: “Solid in set-piece and defence but offered little impact around the park.”

Rugby Pass 6/10: “A mixed night for Vaa’i but he did pull off two important players. He had a big ruck steal on halfway with the Wallabies making a half break up the middle in the first half. Gave one back cleaning from the side on Taniela Tupou. Early in the second half he won another ruck penalty with the Wallabies launching inside New Zealand’s 22. Forced a flat pass called forward shortly after. Off at 51.”

Replacement: Should probably keep his place but needs to perform better.
