Commentator Jo Wotton will create history today as Channel 7’s first female caller.

Hoping to make the coverage “richer” with her involvement, Wotton becomes the third female to take the microphone on television for the men’s game after Fox Footy’s Kelli Underwood and Jess Webster.

Wotton will be part of the team for the St Kilda v GWS Giants match at Marvel Stadium.

“I’ve been fortunate to work alongside some outstanding men and women in football media throughout my career — most recently calling footy on SEN and Seven’s AFL Women’s coverage,’’ Wotton said.

“We’ve never had so many diverse voices reporting on and calling our game, and I think that’s really important for the future of football.

“The standard of commentary and analysis across the game is incredibly strong, and it’s only getting better as more people from different backgrounds come into the industry. I hope that continues to grow because it makes the coverage richer for everyone watching.”

Wotton will call play-by-play alongside Jack Heverin, with Tom Morris hosting and reporting from the boundary and Cameron Ling and Campbell Brown doing expert commentary.

She will return to call Essendon v St Kilda in Round 17.

“They’re all incredibly talented broadcasters and great people, so I’m sure we’ll have a lot of fun while calling what is shaping up to be a brilliant match,’’ Wotton said.

“It’s a really exciting time to be a footy caller. The game has opened up considerably and we’re seeing much more free-flowing football, which makes for a fantastic spectacle.

“We’ve also been spoiled with some incredible finishes over the past few weeks. First and foremost, I’m a footy fan. I love a tight contest that goes right down to the wire just as much as the viewers watching at home or in the stands.”

Channel 7’s Head of AFL and Sport Innovation, Gary O’Keeffe, said Wotton had consistently impressed.

“Jo is an exemplary caller who has earned this opportunity through her talent, professionalism, and dedication to her craft over many years,’’ he said.

“Jo has consistently impressed us with her preparation, football knowledge and ability to bring the game to life for viewers, both on our AFLW coverage and through her men’s football commentary on radio. She has been a valued member of Seven’s AFLW broadcast team since 2020 and will bring a fresh voice to our men’s AFL coverage.”
