Crews close area around iconic Elk Statue in Portland to repair damage to fountain base

PORTLAND, Ore. (KATU) — The Thompson Elk Statue and Fountain will close again Monday, roughly two months after the iconic downtown Portland fixture made its return to the pedestal on Main Street.

The City of Portland is closing Main between Third and Fourth avenues to repair some damage to the granite fountain at the pedestal base.

A semi truck hit the corner of the fountain back in April, chipping the stone and leaving an oil stain.

The city expects the repairs to take about two weeks.

The damage happened nearly two weeks after the elk statue was repositioned at its post downtown.

The statue was removed during the 2020 protests after several fires damaged the structural integrity of the base, creating a fall risk for the elk.

Once traffic reopens, Main Street will limit some truck traffic for longer vehicles.
