For a band as documented as Nirvana, you’d think we’ve heard it all by now. Not quite.

At 3 p.m. CT on Tuesday, June 30, a previously unreleased recording of Nirvana’s July 7, 1989, show at Madison’s O’Cayz Corral will make its public debut on YouTube — 35 years after it was captured on cassette by an audience member and quietly traded through the underground tape-swapping network that fueled music fandom long before streaming.

The recording’s release is thanks in large part to former Madisonian and obsessive music archivist Kurt Stream, who first uncovered evidence of the tape while researching Madison Magazine’s 2020 cover story on Nirvana’s ties to the city.

“I just went about to see if that first Nirvana show in Madison was recorded,” he says. That search led him to one of the few known copies, owned by a collector in Atlanta. The original taper, however, wasn’t ready for it to be shared publicly.

Stream waited for six years.

Last week, working with LiveNirvana.com, he finally received permission from the anonymous recorder to release the audio. It’s a small victory for anyone who cares about music history.

“The thing about tape-trading culture is that so many of those recordings never got digitized,” Stream says. “People die, tapes get thrown out. It’s important to go the extra mile to try to locate and find these recordings before they’re lost forever.”

For Stream, it’s personal. He worked as a sound engineer at O’Cayz before the legendary venue burned down in 2001 and now runs the O’Cayz Archive Project, cataloging more than 3,000 shows and thousands of performers who passed through its doors.

There’s one recording that would complete Stream’s catalog and he has a plea to anyone that might have access. It’s the recording of Nirvana’s second Madison performance at Club Underground in 1990, while the band was recording at Smart Studios.

“That’s the only missing piece right now,” he says.
