Louisville artist opens first solo gallery show at Floyd County Cultural Arts Center
LOCAL ROAD AND TRANSPORTATION PROJECTS. A LOCAL ARTIST IS MAKING HER GALLERY DEBUT WITH A DEEPLY PERSONAL NEW EXHIBIT. SAM CARTER SPOKE WITH HER ABOUT THE STORY BEHIND THE WORK. RIGHT NOW, I’M IN THE FLOYD COUNTY CARNEGIE LIBRARY CULTURAL ARTS CENTER INSIDE THE REALLY BREATHTAKING NEW EXHIBIT, REDEMPTION BY LOUISVILLE ARTIST. EACH PIECE INSIDE THIS IS A LITTLE PIECE OF HER, A PROFESSIONAL ARTIST FOR THE LAST DECADE, JAELEN MONET STEWART CUT HER TEETH MAKING MURALS, BUT IT WAS WHEN SHE DID A DEEP DIVE INTO WHO SHE IS AND WHERE SHE COMES FROM THAT HER FIRST EVER GALLERY SHOW, REDEMPTION, WAS BORN. I REALLY WANTED TO USE THIS OPPORTUNITY TO CREATE SOMETHING THAT WAS REALLY GOOD FOR MYSELF, BUT COULD KIND OF CHANGE A LITTLE BIT OF MY OWN NARRATIVE OF WHERE I COME FROM, THE THEMES OF PERSONAL HISTORY AND REDEMPTION RUN DEEPLY THROUGH THE TWO ROOM EXHIBITION ON DISPLAY UNTIL OCTOBER 17TH. AS PART OF THE EXPERIENCE, JALEN HAS CURATED KITS FOR YOUNG PEOPLE ALL CENTERED AROUND HER CHARACTER MONET THE DOLL. AND I’VE CREATED ACTIVITIES WHERE YOU CAN REALLY PUSH YOUR INNER CREATIVITY AND YOU CAN CREATE A WORLD OF YOUR OWN, JUST LIKE MONET IS. THE DOLLS JUST TO BE WHO YOU ARE, TO HAVE INDIVIDUALITY. BORN AND RAISED IN WEST LOUISVILLE, JALEN WANTS TO SHARE HER LIVED EXPERIENCE WITH AS MANY PEOPLE WHO ARE WILLING AND HOPE ISN’T THAT YOU TAKE AWAY SOMETHING SPECIFIC FROM THE EXPERIENCE, BUT SIMPLY THAT YOU HAVE ONE. WILL YOU COME IN HERE? I DON’T WANT YOU TO FEEL A CERTAIN TYPE OF WAY. I JUST WANT YOU TO FEEL SEEN. SO WHATEVER SPACE THAT YOU ARE IN, I WANT YOU TO KNOW THAT SOMEBODY SEES YOU, SOMEBODY FEELS YOU, AND SOMEBODY SUPPORTS YOU THROUGH ART. THIS IS THE REDEMPTION KIT THAT I WAS TELLING YOU ABOUT. For the last 10 years, Jaylin Monet’ Stewart has been a professional artist. First making her mark with murals, Stewart recently opened her first solo gallery show, Redemption, at the Floyd County Carnegie Library Cultural Arts Center.”I really wanted to use this opportunity to create something really good for myself, but could really kind of change my own narrative of where I come from,” Stewart said.Personal history and mental health are themes that run throughout the two-room exhibition. As part of the programming, Jaylin has curated activity kits featuring her creation, Monte’ the Doll, to help young people connect more deeply with the work on the walls. “You can create a world of your own just like Monte, the Doll, just to be who you are, to have free individuality,” Stewart said.Redemption is on display until Oct. 17. The Cultural Center is also offering a host of activities for all ages this summer.
