One of Mel Gibson‘s epic dramas is getting a theatrical re-release, and it comes with an exclusive sneak peek into his latest passion project. Gibson’s impressive career spans almost five decades — he appeared in over 70 films and played iconic characters. He also directed sweeping dramas about faith and the human spirit, and one of those has sparked controversy, dividing critics and audiences. 22 years after its premiere, that film is set to return to theaters, as anticipation mounts for its sequel’s release.
Lionsgate and Fathom Entertainment will bring back Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ to the big screen from Sept. 10 to 17, newly remastered in 4K and with Dolby Atmos sound. The limited screening offers another opportunity to revisit the biblical drama in theaters, an experience that has recently surged in popularity, despite the rise of streaming. First released in 2004, The Passion of the Christ focuses on Jesus Christ’s final twelve hours on earth, from his agony at the Garden of Olives to his crucifixion. A brief epilogue also depicted his resurrection.
The special screenings will include an exclusive, behind-the-scenes sneak peek of The Resurrection of the Christ, a two-part saga slated to release in May 2027 and May 2028. The Resurrection of the Christ builds on the story of Jesus’ sacrifice and resurrection, and as Gibson previously teased, his descent into Hades (Harrowing of Hell). People have been anticipating the sequel since the 2004 film’s release, but most expected it would depict Jesus’ reunion with his disciples, his ascent into heaven, and the acts of the apostles as told in the Bible.
Mel Gibson confirmed the sequel was in development in 2016, with Braveheart co-writer Randall Wallace. Addressing the apparent lack of material to adapt into a two-part sequel, Gibson said they’re telling a story that expands on the three days between his death and resurrection — it starts with the fall of the angels and another realm. “You need to go Hell. You need to go to Sheol,” he said in an interview. He previously said he was torn between two scripts, one was straightforward, and one he described as a surreal “acid trip.” He has yet to reveal his approach to the sequel’s fantastic narrative.
The Passion of the Christ drew heavy controversy during its release, criticized for its graphic violence, and, according to historians and film critics, antisemitic themes. Leading up to the film’s 2004 premiere, Gibson asserted that, “Anti-semitism is not only contrary to my personal beliefs, it is also contrary to the core message of my movie. The Passion is a film meant to inspire not offend.” Critics called him out in 2006 after his disparaging remarks during a drunk-driving incident. He has since apologized for the statements.
The Resurrection of the Christ will have an all-new ensemble featuring Mariela Garriga as Mary Magdalene, Kasia Smutniak as Mary, Riccardo Scamarcio as Pontius Pilate, Pier Luigi Pasino as Peter, and Jaakko Ohtonen as Jesus Christ, originally played by Jim Caviezel. Caviezel was reportedly set to reprise the role up until April 2025, and the film would use de-aging technology. His role was confirmed to have been recast in October 2025 because the de-aging process proved too expensive.
