Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Three and Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Doomsday both land in theaters on December 18, 2026, neither studio budging off the date. Fans and press have taken to calling the collision “Dunesday,” a nod to 2023’s Barbenheimer showdown, a nickname Robert Downey Jr. and Timothée Chalamet themselves coined at a January event.
Denis Villeneuve just dropped a fresh trailer for Dune: Part Three, and he’s not blinking. December 18, 2026 remains circled in red for both his Frank Herbert adaptation and Marvel’s Avengers: Doomsday, a scheduling standoff neither Warner Bros./Legendary nor Disney/Marvel has budged from. Robert Downey Jr. and Timothée Chalamet themselves put a name on the collision back in January, half joking, half daring the other side to fold. Call it Dunesday: a Barbenheimer rematch, sandworms versus superheroes, same multiplex, same night.
December 18, 2026: two giants, one date
Hollywood has a collision on the calendar. On December 18, 2026, Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Three, adapted from Frank Herbert’s Dune Messiah, opens the same day as Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Doomsday, a centerpiece of MCU Phase Six. Neither studio has budged, and fans have already given the standoff a name: Dunesday.
How the standoff happened
The overlap was not part of anyone’s original plan. Dune: Part Three staked out the December 18 date first, while Avengers: Doomsday was initially set for May 2025 before the 2023 Hollywood strikes pushed it back, eventually landing on the same day. Months later, neither Warner Bros. and Legendary nor Disney has signaled any plan to move.
The nickname itself came straight from the stars. At a January 2026 event, Robert Downey Jr. and Timothée Chalamet coined the term together, echoing 2023’s Barbenheimer phenomenon. “We both have films opening on Dec 18, and we decided to coin it,” Downey Jr. said.
Two ensembles built for a heavyweight fight
Villeneuve brings back Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides and Zendaya as Chani, alongside Jason Momoa, Florence Pugh, Rebecca Ferguson, Charlotte Rampling, Isaach De Bankolé and Javier Bardem, with Anya Taylor-Joy and Robert Pattinson joining the saga. Marvel counters with Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Vanessa Kirby, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Letitia Wright, Paul Rudd, Wyatt Russell, Tenoch Huerta Mejía and Ebon Moss-Bachrach in its Phase Six lineup. Political maneuvering on Arrakis on one screen, multiverse chaos on the other: moviegoers face a genuine dilemma, unless they opt for the double feature.
A farewell for one saga, a springboard for the other
For Villeneuve, this is the end of the road. The director has confirmed that Dune: Part Three, closing out his adaptation of Dune Messiah, will be the last Dune film he makes. A first trailer dropped today, July 8, 2026, giving audiences their earliest look at the finale five months ahead of release.
Marvel, by contrast, is already looking past December. The studio has scheduled Avengers: Secret Wars, the direct follow-up to Doomsday, for December 17, 2027, exactly one day short of a year after Dunesday.
