Legendary Aussie musician Rick Springfield would have zero problems winning Jessie’s Girl these days.
The 76-year-old rocker is resetting fitness goals for admirers around the world as viral videos of him shirtless and ripped flood social media.
The leather pants-clad rocker, who is opening for former Van Halen frontman Sammy Hagar on his American tour, has been ditching his T-shirt to rock out on the song that propelled him to No. 1 on the US charts 45 years ago.
It’s not just his torso that appears to be in excellent shape. Springfield’s vocals on Jessie’s Girl are also holding up in his 70s.
American podcaster Joe Rogan and his guest, Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee were among the cheer squad applauding Springfield’s fitness and performance.
“This is literally bananas. He’s 76 years old and he’s singing Jessie’s Girl like he just wrote it,” Rogan said when introducing a clip of Springfield in action on his recent podcast.
“First of all, he looks f…ing incredible, like he’s working out every day; he looks like a 30-year-old guy.
Tommy Lee declared Springfield to be “f…ing inspirational.”
“Good job, bro,” Lee said.
In fact, the singer was doing such a good job, 78-year-old Hagar joked he considered kicking him off the tour.
“Rick, you crushed it again tonight; I’m thinking about having you thrown off the tour,” he commented on a post of Springfield rocking out.
“How is this man 76!? Looks like he found the Fountain of Youth,” commented a fan on one of the performance videos.
“Be like Rick! Forever young!” applauded another fan.
The Aussie star has been based in the US since the early 1970s after a brief stint as a teen pop heart-throb in the band Zoot.
He struggled to shake off the teen idol tag until 1981 when he released his album Working Class Dog which sold more than three million copies in America alone, spearheaded by the global hit Jessie’s Girl.
As Springfield chased his dream of chart success in the US in the late 1970s, he also launched his acting career with a succession of cameos in hit TV shows including The Six Million Dollar Man, The Hardy Boys, Wonder Woman and The Rockford Files.
He became a soap opera superstar when he landed the role of Dr Noah Drake on General Hospital in the early 80s and rejoined the show in 2005.
He co-starred opposite Meryl Streep in the 2015 film Ricki and the Flash.
Springfield last toured Australia in 2007 as part of the Countdown Spectacular.
