Richard Gere is returning to the big screen for a new romantic comedy about an age-gap romance.
Gere, 76, will star opposite 28-year-old Diana Silvers in an adaptation of Lisa Halliday’s critically acclaimed novel, Asymmetry.
The Pretty Woman actor stars as a 70-year-old bestselling author who falls for his young editorial assistant, played by the Booksmart actress, leading to a secret, life-changing romance.
In photos obtained by InTouch, the pair can be seen holding hands while walking in New York City’s Upper West Side on Monday, July 13. Gere is dressed in a grey suit jacket and pants, with an olive-toned dress shirt underneath, while Silvers sports a black tank top and skirt, with a butter yellow sweater draped over her shoulders. The young actress accessorized the look with a black bag and a pair of loafers, while Gere opted for a pair of his signature black sunglasses.
Production officially began earlier this month. A first-look image from the film, shared by People, shows the pair sharing a laugh while sitting on a bench in New York City’s Riverside Park on July 2. The moment captures a pivotal scene from the novel in which Gere’s Ezra and Silvers’ Alice meet in Central Park.

“Their one moment of eye contact sparks a connection that leads them both down a life-changing rabbit hole, where they create a private world just for two,” the film’s synopsis reads, per FilmNation Entertainment, which is co-financing the movie alongside Rainmaker Films. “Ezra, famous for his audacious work, finds someone with whom he can be openly vulnerable, and Alice finds the courage to explore her own aspirations as a writer. Until it is all put at risk when their secret relationship is exposed.”
Halliday’s debut novel became a massive hit following its 2018 release, with The New York Times adding it to its list of “15 remarkable books by women that are shaping the way we read and write fiction in the 21st century,” and former President Barack Obama naming it one of his favorite books of the year.
According to a report from Deadline, which first announced the movie in early May, the film will be directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Edward Zwick, whose credits include The Last Samurai. Zwick, 73, Halliday and Marshall Herskovitz are penning the screenplay.
“It has been a pleasure and a privilege to work with Ed and Marshall on transposing Alice and Ezra’s story for the screen,” Halliday said in a press release about adapting the script, per Deadline. “I am enormously grateful to them for their humor, ingenuity, courage, compassion, and dedication.”

Zwick, who is returning to feature filmmaking for the first time in eight years with Asymmetry, added: “Like so many others, I was charmed by Lisa’s book, not just because it’s emotional, insightful, and very funny, but because it’s about two people who discover that what the world calls asymmetry can in fact have another name: love.”
While the love story is an “unconventional one,” Stacey Snider, FilmNation Entertainment’s chief creative officer, and Clay Pecorin, co-founder of Rainmaker Films, tell Deadline it shows what happens when two people “explore an improbable connection” at “very different stages in their lives,” challenging both their and our “preconceptions about love and power.”
Asymmetry has yet to receive a release date.
