Benbecula-based Fraser Architecture is rebranding as Durie Architecture following the retirement of Robert and Janice Fraser.
The duo founded the practice in 2008 and specialised in contemporary, sustainable architecture tailored to the unique climate and cultural context of the islands.
They earned a reputation for their use of renewables and low-carbon technologies, sensitive integration with traditional and historic buildings, and a strong track record in Listed Building projects.
The architecture firm that has worked extensively in the Western Isles and West Highlands is now being taken over by senior architect Alex Durie, who has worked closely with the Frasers since 2017.
Though Robert and Janice Fraser have retired, they will remain involved in construction as co-directors of 7-22 Systems Ltd, which specialises in prefabricated building systems.
Durie Architecture, meanwhile, plans to maintain a focus on sustainable, fabric-first architecture and will expand the practice’s customer base.
Announcing taking over the reins, Alex Durie said via LinkedIn: “Having worked closely with Robert and Janice since joining the practice in 2017, it is a real privilege to continue the work they began when they founded Fraser Architecture in 2008. Their commitment to thoughtful, sustainable and technically rigorous design has shaped a practice rooted in people, place and community, and I am deeply grateful for their trust, guidance and friendship over the past decade.
“As the practice moves forward, we will begin trading as Durie Architecture, while maintaining the same values, care and commitment to clients, collaborators and communities across the Outer Hebrides, and the Highlands and Islands beyond.
“I’m also pleased to continue collaborating as co-Directors with Robert and Janice through 7-22 Systems Ltd with our innovative, low-impact, ecological buildings.”
In a statement issued to Scottish Construction Now, Robert Fraser said: “We’re delighted to be passing Fraser Architecture into Alex’s hands. Since joining us in 2017, he has worked very closely with us on all aspects of our practice and has led on much of our project portfolio. This will ensure continuity for clients, collaborators and communities as Alex leads the next stage of the practice’s development”.
Janice Fraser added: “When we set up Fraser Architecture, we took a leap of faith – eighteen years on, we’ve had the privilege to deliver an inspiring and varied range of projects for clients across the Outer Hebrides and beyond. Having Alex with us on half of that journey has certainly helped us to build the thriving practice we have today, and we wish him every success.”
