Mayo wake up All-Ireland Champions

There were historic scenes in Croke Park yesterday, as Mayo lifted the Sam Maguire cup for the first time in 75 years.

They overcame Kerry in a thrilling All-Ireland Senior Football final.

Joe Biden is among those celebrating Mayo’s historic win.

The former US president – whose ancestors hail from Ballina – says “Sam is coming home” and has told his “friends in Mayo” to enjoy every minute.

Liam and Noel Gallagher – whose mother Peggy grew up in Charlestown – have also both posted online to share their congratulations.

Preparations are underway for a homecoming event in Castlebar this evening.

The winning team are expected back at McHale Park at around 5 o’clock.
