Kiwi sprinter Zoe Hobbs has won gold in the 100m at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Starting in lane 7 with lane 8 vacant due to the absence of a Jamaican competitor, the 28-year-old sprinter led all the way to win with a national record time of 10.93s. It is also an Oceania record. Her previous best was 10.94s.

Englishwoman Amy Hunt (10.98s) took silver, and Australian Torrie Lewis (10.99s) took bronze. The wind was listed as +1.0 – the legal limit is +2.0.
Hobbs finished fifth in the 100m final at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games.
Speaking after the race, held on a wet track in pouring rain, Hobbs told Sky: “Wild. I don’t even know, I can’t even put it into words, it’s just crazy.
“I just think about the time I was told I shouldn’t do the 100m because it’s too hard to do, that I should consider doing other events because I’ll never make it as a sprinter in the 100m.
“I actually had a bit of a stumble and had to recover myself, and I wasn’t sure if that would be enough to keep me in it. But I don’t know, the rest is a bit of a blur and I managed to hold them off and I had to dip, it’s not my strength to dip, but I think I dipped.”
Hobbs is the first Kiwi to win gold in the event – at the 1962 Empire Games Doreen Porter won silver over 100 yards.
