Despite being born just after the turn of the new millennium, I think I know the 1990s well when it comes to fashion and pop culture. After all, nostalgia for the ’90s is the hardest to escape, with countless trends from a decade in which minimalism and grunge converged, along with cult series and films that changed the industry forever. And over the past few days, the nostalgic moments on the red carpet at the premiere of The Shards have once again reminded the online community of this exciting decade, and of course, social media cannot stop buzzing about it.

Kaia Gerber and Homer Gere play two of the leading roles in the series, which is based on Bret Easton Ellis’s novel and is poised to become the biggest hit of the summer. For me, as a member of Gen Z, Kaia Gerber is first and foremost, well, Kaia Gerber, a model who often gives us excellent reading recommendations, and only then the daughter of the legendary Cindy Crawford. However, her press tour looks, from a shimmering slip dress to a simple red Alaïa ensemble, were irresistibly reminiscent of the dresses Cindy wore on the red carpet in the 1990s, so much so that social media was flooded with comments such as: For a moment, I thought I was looking at Cindy!

And yet, the additional throwback lies in the fact that Kaia is appearing on the red carpet alongside Homer Gere, Richard Gere’s son. It is not only a reminder of the great red carpet style of the 1990s, when Cindy Crawford chose alluring slip dresses and dazzling looks while Richard Gere was the very definition of masculine minimalism, but also a nod to one of the decade’s most beloved celebrity couples.

Although it has been more than three decades since Cindy Crawford and Richard Gere were last seen together on the red carpet in 1994, shortly before their divorce in 1995, they remain a couple many remember fondly. During their marriage, they were considered one of the most popular it couples. It is easy to see why: they seamlessly combined aspirational Hollywood glamour with high fashion. They became a symbol of 1990s pop culture, perhaps best evidenced by the sheer frenzy sparked by the fact that their children are starring together in a new series.
The Shards, a series that has held promise since the moment it was announced, is becoming a hit even before its release and a must-watch for every nostalgia lover. In addition to evoking 1990s pop culture, the series is set in Los Angeles in 1981, promising a visual feast for anyone who loves the aesthetics of the final decades of the last century. And until the series finally arrives on Hulu on August 5, photographs of Cindy Crawford and Richard Gere are taking us on a nostalgic journey.
