The hot weather is not the only pressure on farmers – the cost of diesel and fertiliser has risen due to the war in Iran and the money the farm received for milk fell at the same time.
“This time last year, we were being paid nearly 45 pence a litre [of milk],” Everall said. “This year we’re being paid about 31 at the moment.”
Add all those together, along with the long hours and day-to-day farming issues and the 27-year-old knows it is “easy for your head to spiral”.
“You really have to work out with your own head why you’re doing it,” he said, considering his and other farmers’ mental health.
“I love it and because it is, and it can be, an incredible way of life – we’re very lucky.
“It’s definitely been more a year to check in with your mates.”
