Ladybug Studio and Gallery is hosting award-winning Chinese brush painting artist Charlotte Fung Miller for August.
An opening reception will be held during Algoma’s First Friday art event on Aug. 7, from 5 to 8 pm, at Ladybug Gallery, 219 Steele St. in Algoma. Visitors can meet the artist and view and purchase her works.
A Chinese philosophy – “reverence for nature, serenity and peace” – inspires the brush paintings by Charlotte Fung Miller of Mukwonago. A native of San Francisco’s Chinatown, Miller studied nine years of Chinese brush painting under Master Lui-Sang Wong of San Francisco. She earned a master’s degree in bacteriology at the University of California at Berkeley.
Miller paints in watercolor on rice paper. No shadowing is used, and depth is achieved only through gradation of color. Miller adds her own individual style by using more color and introducing Midwestern themes, especially the colors of Wisconsin’s changing seasons. The artist has also taught courses in Chinese art and cooking to share her heritage with others.
