HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) – A vibrant new tribute to a beloved local music icon has been officially unveiled in downtown Huntsville.
Community members gathered to honor the memory of legendary musician Dave Gallaher, known affectionately across North Alabama as “Microwave Dave.” Gallaher passed away in February after spending decades performing, mentoring other artists, and growing the local music scene.
In addition to his storied performance career, Gallaher established the Microwave Dave Music Education Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to bringing music education and local musicians into area classrooms.
The new mural, painted by a local artist and close friend of Gallaher’s, is located in downtown Huntsville at The Lumberyard — at the fitting address of 108 Microwave Dave Way.
The artist shared that Gallaher’s legacy of community service inspired him to give back in a similar way.
“Dave and I were good friends, and for me to see an artist, whether he’s a musician or whatever, get his flowers, you know?” the artist said. “As a matter of fact, because of the way in which Dave handled his business, the wife and I have established a foundation for the arts, too. Because it just makes so much sense. And so I just feel great about being able to do this for my friend, for the foundation, and for Huntsville.”
The mural stands as a permanent tribute to Gallaher’s lasting impact on the city’s culture and music education.
