Bear Creek Park-inspired sketches, paintings at Surrey Art Gallery starting Aug. 8

Members of South Surrey and White Rock Arts Society made their way to Bear Creek Park to create works for a new exhibit at Surrey Art Gallery.
Opened Saturday, Aug. 8, Marking the Seasons features sketches and paintings inspired by the park where the gallery is located, 88 Avenue at King George Boulevard.
Over the past year, artists with the group took their sketchbooks, paints and folding chairs and headed outdoors to depict the park’s ever-changing landscape.
“Working ‘plein air’ through sunshine, clouds, blossoms, and falling leaves, each artist returned to favourite spots throughout the park, capturing the changing seasons one brushstroke at a time,” explains a post on surrey.ca/artgallery.
Admission is free to see Marking the Seasons until Nov. 1. Related events include a fall opening art party Oct. 3 and a Thursday Artist Talk with watercolour artist Jess Rice, Oct. 1. Rice grew up on a ranch in Montana and now lives on the West Coast, and both settings have influenced his work. “He paints bright, bold paintings which lean towards romantic realism,” a bio says.
South Surrey and White Rock Art Society was founded in 1959 by a group of artists who wanted to paint together.
This summer, Canadian artist and architect Keerat Kaur has been the main focus at Surrey Art Gallery. A solo show, If Gardens Could Dream, closing Aug. 30, features her painting, sculpture, digital media, embroidery, poetry and architectural forms.
Summer hours at the gallery (until Sept. 6) are Monday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday to Thursday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., closed Sundays and holidays.
