The work of contemporary artist and educator Chrissy Yendell will be on display starting Aug. 18

The Sault Ste. Marie Museum presenting Time in Colour, a solo exhibition by contemporary abstract artist and educator Chrissy Yendell, on display from Aug. 18 to Sept. 4.

A Bachelor of Fine Arts graduate from Algoma University, Yendell creates expressive acrylic and mixed media paintings inspired by the landscapes, seasons, and quiet rhythms of Northern Ontario. Her work explores the intersection of nature, memory, time, and femininity, using rich layers of colour, texture, and intuitive mark-making to create paintings that invite reflection and personal interpretation, a news release said.

“As both an artist and educator, I believe creativity has the power to foster curiosity, connection, and new ways of seeing the world,” says Yendell.

“My work is less about recreating what we see and more about capturing what we carry with us—our memories, our connection to place, and the moments that shape us. I hope visitors will slow down, reflect, and discover their own connection within each piece.”

The exhibition showcases a new body of work reflecting Yendell’s ongoing exploration of contemporary abstract painting. Inspired by the natural beauty of Northern Ontario, each painting evolves through an intuitive process of layering colour, texture, and expressive markmaking. Rather than offering a single narrative, the works invite viewers to discover their own stories and interpretations within the layers of paint.

In addition to her artistic practice, Yendell is a dedicated educator whose passion for creativity extends beyond the studio. As an artist and elementary teacher, she believes art has the ability to encourage curiosity, meaningful dialogue, and connection within a community.

The community is invited to attend the Opening Reception and Meet the Artist event on Saturday, Aug. 22 from 7 – 9 p.m. Guests are invited to meet Chrissy Yendell, enjoy refreshments from Broers Jansen Wine Bar.

The exhibition will be on display at the Sault Ste. Marie Museum from Aug. 18 to Sept. 4, during regular museum hours.
