A Maryland-based behavioral health company has purchased a local psychiatry practice, further expanding its Richmond-area presence shortly after opening its first local office.
Bloom Health Centers recently announced the acquisition of Insight Physicians and its two offices in western Henrico and North Chesterfield. The deal brings Bloom to a local footprint of three offices, which was established with an outpost that opened last year on HCA’s Parham Doctors’ Hospital campus.
Bloom provides mostly outpatient therapy and counseling as well as treatment for conditions like OCD and depression, while Insight is geared more toward treatment in inpatient hospital settings.
Bloom CEO Neel Nene said he came to know Ben Wiseman, a partner at Insight, and thought the offerings of the two practices, which both operate in other medical providers’ facilities in addition to their own offices, would complement each other if brought together.
“Ben was a really good partner to us. He worked for Bloom as an independent contractor while being a part of Insight and he saw what we’re doing at HCA is working well. Insight has these relationships with Bon Secours as well as (mental health centers operator) Summit, and they’re primarily an inpatient business,” Nene said. “My thesis is everything should be in house, under one roof.”
Insight’s operations are being rebranded to Bloom as part of the acquisition. The Insight offices at 2810 N. Parham Road and 804 Moorefield Park Drive are expected to continue to operate following the deal.
The sellers in the deal were Insight partners Drs. Zaffar Ali, Phillip Marshall and Wiseman. All three are staying on with Bloom. Terms of the deal, which was announced in early July, weren’t disclosed. Insight was founded in 1984 and was originally called Buxton, Corcoran & Sellman.
Nene considered the Insight deal to be Bloom’s first notable acquisition, coming after a 2022 deal in which Bloom bought the business of a provider who was winding down her practice.
“That really was just a person who was retiring and wanted to give us her patients,” he said.
Bloom has 325 staff following the Insight acquisition and nearly 30 outpatient centers in Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and D.C., and also staffs inpatient facilities. Bloom will maintain its original Richmond-area office at 7702 N. Parham Road.
