Slater shocked the rugby league world when he stood down from his coaching role on Friday afternoon. It quickly sparked discussion on who could step up and lead Queensland in Slater’s place.

Smith has emerged as the favourite with Slater and Wayne Bennett both believing he’s best suited for the role.

“You don’t have to convince me. I’ve been a part of Cameron Smith’s life since I was 17 years old. I know exactly what he brings to a footy team as a player, as a leader and as a coach. He would do a fantastic job,” Slater said on Channel 9’s Sunday Footy Show.

“The QRL will go through their due diligence and work out who is best suited. I have my views and I’ll voice them to the right people.”

In an interesting twist, Slater, who won three of five Origin series while in charge, hinted on Sunday that he is open to one day returning to the position he just gave up.

“When I decided to take up the role five years ago I didn’t think it was forever, and maybe this decision right now isn’t forever either,” he said.

“When the position was put in front of me five years ago, I looked at it and thought I probably don’t need the job, but the position to lead Queensland was super important to me.

“It’s probably more just a feeling that it’s the right time for someone else to come in and lead our footy team.”

The Storm legend also discussed the persistant rumour that he’d consider coaching his former club.

The Storm have publicly said they’d love for Slater to replace Craig Bellamy in the next couple of seasons, but the champion fullback has yet to express an interest in becoming a full-time NRL coach.

I’ve always said and I’ve been pretty consistent with it, that I don’t see myself as an NRL coach. But you never say never,” Slater said.

“It’s obviously Craig Bellamy’s last year next year, but right now I don’t see myself coaching in the NRL.”

Meanwhile, Bennett agrees with Slater that Smith is the “ideal choice” for the Maroons’ next head coach.

“He’s a great player and he has been part of the Queensland system before as an assistant to Billy,” Bennett said.

“There’s no doubt for me he would be great. If he wanted to do it, he would handle it.

“He has been there with Billy and done some coaching, he would have great respect from the playing group.”

Given Bennett’s voice holds so much weight in the game, Smith is the clear favourite for the role.

Does he want it though?

The NRL’s record holder for games played says he would consider it.

“People are asking me if I will coach,” Smith said on 2GB.

“To be honest, I really didn’t think Billy would step down this year, so I haven’t thought about it. But it’s something definitely to consider.

“I was fortunate enough to spend two years with Billy as an assistant coach in 2022 and 2023, and had a fantastic time.

“I’d have to speak with my family first and foremost. That will be the deciding factor.”
