Material discovery and sampling has traditionally been a highly fragmented process, involving individual requests, separate shipments and single-item returns. Swatchbox streamlines this process by bringing material samples together on one centralised platform – offering material discovery, product data and sample ordering through to consolidated delivery, returns and material recirculation after use. Designed and operated by architects, the service has already proven successful in international markets and is now being introduced in Australia.
Despite the digitisation of many design outputs, physical material samples remain an important part of the product specification process – allowing design teams to assess colour, texture, finish, quality and scale in real life. Through Swatchbox, architects and interior designers can discover materials, access product information and order samples from multiple participating brands in one place. Samples are delivered together in a single shipment and can be returned free of charge.
Operating under the ‘Second Life Samples’ program, the returns scheme is not only limited to samples originally ordered through Swatchbox – participating studios can also return unwanted samples from existing material libraries, including samples from other sources.
Usable samples are then re-catalogued, stocked through Swatchbox fulfilment centres and relisted on the platform for other architects and designers to request. Samples that are unlabelled, lightly worn, or discontinued may be directed to architecture schools, design programs, or other educational uses. Materials unsuitable for reuse are assessed for recycling through partner networks. Today more than 90% of collected samples are suitable for recirculation through the Second Life process.
Swatchbox is a free service for architecture and design professionals developed to enhance productivity in material sourcing and sample management while reducing sample waste within one connected ecosystem.
