VERONA, Wis. (WMTV) -A new sustainable SSM Health clinic is preparing to open in Verona. The clinic’s design is focused on patient comfort and peace of mind.

The clinic will offer services ranging from family medicine to eye care.
The clinic’s new layout eliminates traditional reception desks. Patients self-register for appointments at a kiosk, and staff can assist if needed. Patients then stop at a room assignment podium before finding their way to their room for their visit.
The clinic has two floors. Its wayfinding system relies on three elements: image, color and room number. Image recognition features nature and outdoor activities that relate to Verona, matched with colors and then letters or characters.

Charlie Tregembo, senior construction project manager for SSM Health, said the imagery is meant to help patients navigate the space.
“It is part of that indication of helping patients safely navigate to their space,” Tregembo said. “They know that if they’ve been in Verona for a number of years, you know, we’re going to see pieces of nature, we’re going to see activities that were on this famous for, so that all just helps them feel right at home when they’re coming to the clinic and finding their space.”
The clinic uses an “onstage, offstage” model, meaning patients have a hallway to themselves while staff enter exam rooms from a second doorway. All conversations and confidential information are discussed only in private rooms, eliminating long reception times and potential privacy issues in the health care system.

Waiting areas were downsized under this model, since patients can walk directly to their room. An occupancy recognition system alerts medical staff when a patient has arrived, helping nurses and health care workers organize patients by color and keep visits moving.
The design reflects the feeling of the Sugar River and nature preserves around Verona. To avoid affecting the bird population, the clinic installed bird-safe glass with dots on a percentage of its windows, based on bird types and navigation patterns, to limit the number of bird strikes per year.

The building is WELL certified, eco-friendly and includes natural light and windows throughout. The design accounts for the wellness of patients and staff, as well as energy conservation and environmental sustainability. Increased natural light reduces the need for light fixtures.
The outpatient clinic will offer the following specialties:

The clinic’s first day of patient care is set for September 14th.
