DANVILLE, Va. (WSET) — A new mental health practice is open in Danville, with the goal of making care more accessible for people in Southside and surrounding rural communities.

Shugart Mental Health is now seeing adult patients at its location on Piney Forest Road. The practice offers psychiatric evaluations, medication management and treatment for a variety of mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder and PTSD.

Owner Karen Shugart says she opened the practice after seeing a growing need for mental health services in the area.

“There’s always a need for more, especially when it comes to mental health,” Shugart said. “Mental health is still an underserved area of healthcare, particularly in smaller towns and more rural areas.”

The practice also offers telehealth services for patients who may not be able to make an appointment in person.

Shugart hopes the new clinic will give more people in Danville and the surrounding area access to mental health resources without having to travel outside the region for care.
