SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) – A Georgia-inspired mural is adding new color to Savannah’s Starland District as developers prepare to bring even more public art to the neighborhood this fall.
Artist Sam Malpass, founder of Badway Creative, recently completed the first large-scale mural at Starland Village, a mixed-use development located at 2213 Bull Street. The permanent artwork features a sweetbay magnolia and brown thrasher.
“I love creating work that feels connected to the place where it lives,” Malpass said. “The sweetbay magnolia and brown thrasher gave me an opportunity to pull from the natural beauty and character of Georgia while creating something bold and welcoming for Starland Village.”
The mural also previews the inaugural Starland Soul Mural Fest, which will bring seven original murals by Savannah artists to the development.
Selected artists will create their murals from Oct. 20 through Nov. 5 based on the theme, “What does ‘Starland Soul’ mean to you?” Their work will also be featured in a Starland Village gallery exhibition.
The winning artist will receive a cash prize, community recognition and one year of studio space.
The initiative will conclude with the Starland Soul Mural Fest celebration on Nov. 6. The event will bring artists, local businesses, vendors, food trucks and community partners together at Starland Village.
Foram Group and Equus Development Partners developed Starland Village’s first phase, featuring 116 apartments and artist studios, while Foram is leading the historic church’s redevelopment in Phase II.
“Public art is an important part of creating a place that feels connected to its surroundings, and Sam’s mural is an exciting first glimpse of what we hope this project will bring to the community,” Foram Group President and CEO Travis Stringer said.
