BELMONT COUNTY, Ohio — A new community hospital is coming to St. Clairsville, bringing emergency and other medical services to one campus as WVU Medicine expands its footprint in Belmont County.
WVU Medicine is building the WVU Medicine St. Clairsville Community Hospital, a $56 million investment along Ebbert Road. Once complete, the facility will include an emergency room, a lab, and inpatient and outpatient services.
“We always say that the river and the state line should not define healthcare,” WVU Medicine Wheeling Hospital President and CEO Doug Harrison said. “And so, it was important for us that we kind of breakdown that geographic barrier, that state line and bring our services in a big way.”
Officials said WVU Medicine has been eyeing the site for about three years and believe it is well-suited for the project.
“From a logistics standpoint, it makes a lot of sense obviously with I-70, I-470, the amount of traffic that goes by this site,” Belmont County Commissioner J.P. Dutton said.
“And we knew that we wanted a presence in St. Clairsville,” Harrison added. “We knew we had to expand our Belmont County presence,.”
The project comes a few years after East Ohio Regional Hospital shut down. Dutton said county leaders have been working to rebuild services and strengthen the community.
“As a local government, trying to be a good partner along with private investments that want to come into our county. We’re working on that every single day trying to better our community economically, but in this case from a healthcare perspective,” Dutton said.
If all goes to plan, officials said the hospital should open at the end of 2027.
