What is ‘Dateline: The Other Side of Paradise’ about?
Tonight’s episode follows the haunting case of Sandra “Sandy” Galas, a 27-year-old Hawaii woman who was found strangled to death inside her car in the garage of her home in the town of ‘Ele’ele on Jan. 25, 2006.
Investigators initially focused on two possible suspects: Sandra’s estranged husband, Darren Galas, and her boyfriend, Ryan Shinjo. While suspicions quickly formed, authorities lacked enough physical evidence to move the case forward, and the investigation stalled for years.
At the heart of the story is Sandra’s father, Larry Mendonca, who refused to let the case be forgotten. He spent nearly a decade pushing investigators, gathering information, and keeping public attention on his daughter’s unsolved murder.
The breakthrough eventually came through a combination of advancements in DNA technology and renewed investigative efforts. Detectives revisited evidence, uncovered records showing Sandra feared her estranged husband, and developed a stronger case years after the killing. Rather than going to trial, Darren Galas ultimately entered a no-contest plea to first-degree assault causing serious bodily injury. In 2018, he was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
