Neutrino research to begin again this fall, and it’s going to be underwater in Lake Vermilion and Lake Superior

Neutrino research will continue in the Northland with underwater detectors in Lake Vermilion and Lake Superior.

Neutrinos are making the news again. They are the lightest particles in the whole universe.

Fermilab is installing neutrino detectors under the water in Lake Vermilion. And UMD is doing the same thing in Lake Superior.

Fermilab says they plan on installing the detectors in mid to late October. They added that impact to Lake Vermilion should be minimal, and the equipment will be removed in 2027.

The company told us this will be the first U.S. experiment of its type where neutrino interactions in open water are detected using their Fermilab detectors. You may remember they have a neutrino detector in Ash River.

UMD shared that their project will be installed in November, near Two Harbors.
