The home is in a semi-rural coastal setting with kiwifruit orchards.
Residents of the area, who did not want to be named, said they saw emergency services at the property on Wednesday afternoon, including a police car, fire truck and ambulance.
They said they had no idea what had happened. Police stayed at the property for some time after the ambulance and fire crew left.
They were shocked to hear later the children had been taken to hospital, and hoped they and their family were okay.
They did not know the family but had seen a preschool-aged child and a woman pushing a baby in a pram there before, and believed it may be a multi-generational household.
