Northland are one more defence away from keeping the Ranfurly Shield for the summer after a strong 34-17 win over Waikato.

Northland lead 15-5 at halftime and turned in into a second successful defence with a solid second half performance.

They face Counties-Manukau in a fortnight with a chance to
keep the Shield for the off-season.

The Taniwha ran in five tries and led 34-10 before Waikato score a late consolation try.
