Police were called to Waterloo Road on Sunday 30 August, after reports of a brawl in which a number of people were hurt.
A 45-year-old man was arrested after he handed himself in at the Wellington Central Police Station.
He was charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and striking with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
The charge has now been upgraded to manslaughter and he is due back in court next month.
