Anticipating people’s outage over the suggestion of banning children’s songs, Ms Rachel had a simple solution:
“People are like, “What will we do? What will we do?” when I’m like, you know how many wonderful nursery rhymes and kids’ songs exist? And we can make new ones.”
Many people on social media expressed surprise at learning that Eeny, meeny, miny, moe originally included a slur.
“In ‘eenie meenie’ in Ireland, at least where I’m from, the words were always ‘catch a tiger by the toe’. Imagine my shock when I found out what the actual lyrics were as an adult the “n” word wasn’t a thing where I grew up (back end of nowhere Ireland),” one person wrote on TikTok.
Ms Rachel also mentioned a fourth nursery rhyme which she said did not need to be banned but should be updated.
“Some nursery rhymes and kids’ songs need to be retired. Some I think can be changed. Like, I feel like ‘The Three Little Kittens’ should not be denied the pie,” she said.
A parent commenting on the video agreed with Ms Rachel.
“I feel so seen for hating the three little kittens rhyme. She didn’t even mention the worst part, where the mom tells them to put on their mittens to eat the pie and then SCOLDS THEM FOR GETTING THEM DIRTY?? Genuinely always hated that rhyme even when I was a kid,” the parent wrote.
Other social media users mentioned other nursery rhymes they thought should be updated:
“Why the mommy on the bus gotta say shh shh shhhh but daddy gets to say I love you,” one person said.
“Five little monkeys doesn’t sit well with my spirit either,” another person said.
