Jack Bauer is ready to save the world again.
Kiefer Sutherland is teasing a potential return to 24 in a new interview, promising that the long-running action series has “taken considerable steps forward” towards another revival.
“[Showrunner] Howard Gordon has come up with an idea that I like,” Sutherland said on the Montreal Now With Aaron Rand podcast on Wednesday. “Before, the material had not been written, so I would have to say, ‘I’m not the one that’s in the way.’ Something has been written. I think it’s really good. I think it’s really strong. And it’s in the process.”

The actor explained that the behind-the-scenes shakeup due to the Fox/Disney merger complicated matters on the business side, but that hasn’t discouraged Sutherland and Gordon from trying to bring the show back.
“24 was originally with Fox, now it’s owned by Disney because of what Fox has sold off, and so it has to go through different channels before it’s either approved or disapproved,” Sutherland said. “Like everybody else, it’s something I would really like to do. I would like to close that story. It was left wide open. So fingers crossed — we’ve taken some considerable steps forward.”
Watch Sutherland’s comments in the interview below (beginning at 14:13):
Sutherland originally starred on 24 beginning in 2001 as the Counter Terrorist Unit’s star agent Jack Bauer, who often went rogue for the greater good, stopping at nothing to save the day from terrorism attacks.
The show ran for eight seasons on Fox, with each season chronicling one day in real time (cue up the ticking clock sound). Sutherland also reprised his role in a TV movie, 24: Redemption, in 2008, which took place between season 6 and season 7.
The show returned as a limited series in 2014 as 24: Live Another Day, set four years after season 8. While it only consisted of 12 episodes, it still tracked 24 hours since the finale featured a 12-hour time jump before ending on a cliffhanger, with Jack sacrificing himself and being taken into Russian custody to save his oldest and most trusted ally, Chloe (Mary Lynn Rajskub).
Fox later tried to reboot the series in 2017 with 24: Legacy, led by Straight Outta Compton breakout star Corey Hawkins, but it was canceled after only one season.

“It was the best time of my life,” Sutherland previously told Entertainment Weekly in 2023. “I was in my early 30s, so I was physically capable. I was not in my 20s, so I was a little smarter — not a whole lot, but a little smarter. And I got to do it for 10 years, which is, I guarantee you, the most stable opportunity that an actor will ever be given… It was incredibly special for me and I would like to see it continue on.”
