A mystery man has been hailed as a “hero”, after he entered a burning building to save an 89-year-old from a housefire in Gisborne.
The fire on Aberdeen Road was reported to emergency services about 1am Saturday.
Detective Senior Sergeant John Love said police understood the man was driving past the burning home, saw the fire and pulled over.
“He then entered the burning building and pulled the occupant to safety through a window.
“However, he left the scene, before emergency services were able to speak with him.”
Love said police were now looking for the man to thank him for “his quick thinking and courageous actions”.
The occupant of the burning home was taken to hospital for further assessment and observation.
Love encouraged anyone with information that could help identify the man to contact Police on 105, quoting file number P067820889.
Police said a scene examination was carried out on Saturday with Fire and Emergency New Zealand.
