New York in 5. Seasons of True Detective, that is. We now know the duo at the heart of the next season of HBO’s long-running existential cop drama, as well as its location. Nicolas Cage let slip at NYCC that he was signed on for True Detective season five, and now we know Antonio Banderas will be playing his partner. According to Deadline, the season will take place in Jamaica Bay, New York. The lagoon on the south shore of Long Island is half in Brooklyn, half in Queens, so expect jurisdiction headaches to accompany the dramatic monologues.
Issa López, who oversaw True Detective: Night Country, is returning as showrunner. “There’s going to be some important connections between everything that happens in Ennis, Alaska, and the characters in Ennis, Alaska, and what happens” in the new season, she told the New York Post in 2024. López also said it’s important to her that all the True Detectives take place in the same universe. “It’s very important for me, and I worked a lot in Night Country about this, to create the feeling that this is the same universe,” she said, “and the weird shit that happens in the first season affects this sensation of, ‘There’s something bigger than us and darker than what we can imagine behind the scenes.’” As far as plot details go, all López could say is that season five would have “really fucked up stuff.” Now we know there will be really fucked-up stuff, Antonio Banderas, and Nicolas Cage. Sounds promising.
