Social Security recipients will see a 3.6% increase to their benefits for 2027, according to a news release from the Social Security Administration.

The 3.6% increase is a cost-of-living adjustment and includes both Old-Age, Survivors, and Disability Insurance and Supplemental Security Income.

About 72 million Social Security beneficiaries will see their monthly benefits increase by an average of $75 per month beginning in January 2027, according to the release.

Roughly 7.3 million people receiving Supplemental Security Income will receive their increased payments on Dec. 31, according to SSA.

Recipients who have a personal Social Security account and are enrolled in paperless notices by Nov. 18 can view their cost-of-living adjustment notice online in late November.

Those not enrolled in paperless notices will receive their notice in December by mail.

The notices will provide exact dates and dollar amounts for the person’s new benefit amount for 2027, according to the release.

Information about Medicare changes for 2027 is available at www.medicare.gov and will be on the Social Security Message Center starting in late November and sent by mail in December to those not enrolled in paperless notices.

Under the Social Security Act, the annual cost-of-living adjustment is calculated based on the increase in the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers as determined by the Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics, according to SSA.
