Greens on course to pick up first Māori electorate – poll

  • October 19, 2026

Undecided voters made up 22%.

Labour was ahead in the party vote on 32%, followed by the Greens on 29%, Te Pāti Māori, 1% and NZ First, 7%.

National polled 5% and Act 1%.

Te Tai Tokerau had been picked as one of this election’s most exciting races after Kapa-Kingi fell out with Te Pāti Māori and opted to run as an independent.

With Labour and the Greens also running competitive campaigns, the race is one of the few genuine four-way contests.

The Greens hold three general electorates but have never won a Māori electorate.

Cost of living was the most important issue in the electorate, with 34% of voters telling the poll it was their top concern; housing was next on 14%, followed by health on 9%.

Kapa-Kingi had done a good job, reckoned 40%, while 14% said she had been poor and 27% said average.

The poll was between October 5 and October 15. It took in 500 respondents, giving it a margin of error of 4.5%.

The results of the poll will be put to candidates during the Te Tai Tonga electorate debate tonight. The debate will be moderated by Maiki Sherman and Julian Wilcox and broadcast live on Whakaata Māori and MĀORI+ at 7pm.

The debate will also be streamed live through the Te Ao Māori News app, Facebook and YouTube channels.
