In the film, Barrie portrayed a divorced white woman who marries a black man, only to face a custody battle when her former husband seeks sole custody of their daughter because of her new marriage.
Her performance earned her the Best Actress award at Cannes in 1964, while the film subsequently received an Academy Award nomination for its screenplay.
Barrie started her professional career in theatre, making her Broadway debut in The Wooden Dish in 1955, before appearing in the 1956 Hollywood drama Giant, which starred Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson and James Dean.

She went on to establish herself as a respected Broadway performer, originating the role of Sarah in the 1970 production of Stephen Sondheim’s Company, alongside Elaine Stritch and George Coe.
Although her character did not have a solo musical number, Barrie appeared in the documentary chronicling the recording of the original Broadway cast album. Her performance also earned her a Tony nomination.
Her other theatre credits included Neil Simon’s California Suite, The Killdeer – for which she received Obie and Drama Desk awards in 1974 – and Harvey Fierstein’s Torch Song Trilogy, in which she replaced Estelle Getty.
Barrie achieved further Hollywood recognition in 1979 when she played Evelyn Stohler, the mother of a young cyclist, Dave Stohler, in the coming-of-age comedy-drama Breaking Away.
The performance earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. She subsequently reprised the same character in the television adaptation, receiving an Emmy nomination in 1981 – a rare achievement for an actor portraying the same character across film and television.
Her ability to portray formidable but affectionate family figures subsequently became a recurring feature of her screen career.
She played the mother of Goldie Hawn’s character in the 1980 comedy Private Benjamin, later appearing as the mother of Edie Falco’s character in Judy Berlin.
Television audiences also knew her as the grandmother of Brooke Shields’ character in the NBC sitcom Suddenly Susan, and as the grandmother of Ellen Muth’s character in the supernatural comedy-drama Dead Like Me.

Her appearances across film, television and theatre brought her into contact with successive generations of performers, while her work in One Potato, Two Potato and Breaking Away remained among her most celebrated screen performances.
Away from acting, Barrie married Jay Harnick in 1964 after the pair met at an audition and developed a friendship that lasted 12 years before they married.
They remained together until Harnick’s death in 2007 and had two children.
Barrie is survived by her daughter Jane, her son Aaron and three grandchildren.
Further reporting confirms Barrie died on October 28 at her Manhattan home. She was also known for playing Elizabeth Miller, the wife of the title character in the police sitcom Barney Miller, alongside Hal Linden.
Barrie had previously undergone treatment for rectal cancer in 1994 and subsequently wrote about her experiences in Second Act and Don’t Die of Embarrassment, seeking to raise awareness of the disease.
She was also diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis in 2014, a progressive condition affecting the lungs. Her family has not publicly identified the type of cancer involved in her final diagnosis.
Her later theatre work included the Broadway production of Significant Other in 2017, while her television credits also included Law and Order, Law and Order: Special Victims Unit, Nurse Jackie and Enlightened.
