Firefighters are still putting out a large blaze at a car parts scrap yard in South Auckland.
The fire broke out at Euro Car Parts on Great South Road in Manurewa at about 3:30pm on Sunday.
It sent a thick plume of black smoke into the air and sparked phone alerts from Fire and Emergency and Auckland Council, warning people to avoid the area and for nearby residents to stay indoors.
As of 8pm, the smoke had cleared, and warnings had been lifted.
Fire and Emergency Northern shift manager Garreth Lewis said there were two piles of cars, with the cars stacked on top of each other, which were on fire when crews arrived at the scene.
He said one of the piles was 60 metres high and 60 metres wide, and the cars were stacked too high. He said a second smaller pile was still alight.
At its peak, he said 70 firefighters were working to extinguish the fire.
