Ryan Murphy’s latest Hulu series, All’s Fair, began with a single request.
“I really wanted to meet Kris Jenner and Kim Kardashian,” Murphy told the crowd at the Director’s Guild on Oct. 16 during the premiere for his upcoming legal drama.

The American Horror Story and Glee creator recalled visiting Jenner’s home, where he did something he had never done before. “I brought a reality pitch … and it wasn’t good. I finished my pitch and Kris said, ‘That was really good, sweetie, but you should write a role for Kim.’” That suggestion ultimately led to Kardashian’s role on American Horror Story — and later to All’s Fair.
The new legal drama unites Kardashian, Niecy Nash-Betts, Sarah Paulson, Glenn Close, Naomi Watts, and Teyana Taylor (who is currently in the top spot on Gold Derby’s Oscar odds for her Best Supporting Actress role in One Battle After Another) in a stylish, high-stakes series centered on power, loyalty, and reinvention. Premiering Nov. 4, the show follows a team of female divorce attorneys who leave a male-dominated law firm to launch their own powerhouse practice.
Murphy said the pitch for the series came together more smoothly than he could have imagined.
“Kris and I marched into Hulu and Kris said, we have this idea where Kim plays a divorce lawyer and they said yes,” he said with a laugh. “That was the pitch.”
While the show boasts an A-list cast and high fashion, Murphy said its true message is about the power of saying yes.
“It is about yes to doing a show that is inspirational and aspirational. It’s a show about bringing back fashion to television in a really big way and I think more importantly it is really a show about women getting the last word, which is something I think we all need right now,” he said, prompting loud cheers from the audience.
Murphy then likened his powerhouse cast to the Avengers, emphasizing their strength and influence.
“In many cases they fought the bad guys and won. They’ve run empires and inspired people all over the world and won countless awards — sometimes wearing capes.”
