At Phoebe’s pace, the zoo team will begin introducing the calf to the other members of the herd.

Naming of the latest elephant calf will come later.

The population of Asian elephants has declined by at least 50% over the last three generations, according to the zoo. They currently occupy 15% of their historic range due to habitat loss, degradation, and poaching.

Reporter Shahid Meighan can be reached at smeighan@dispatch.com, at ShahidMeighan on X, and at shahidthereporter.dispatch.com on Bluesky.

Second elephant calf born at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium | Video Phoebe the Asian elephant gave birth…

[26
441,73299,73300,861,8276,440,42157,3403,111,43,139,69,428,3410,72605,8275,8282,147,38,274,478,36369,10450,431,416,406,34320
post-100226","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-wildlife","tag-affiliate","tag-aquariums","tag-aquariums-u0026-preserves","tag-elephants","tag-experiment","tag-local","tag-local-affiliate-travel","tag-negative","tag-new-zealand","tag-news","tag-newzealand","tag-nz","tag-overall","tag-overall-negative","tag-preserves","tag-renews","tag-renews-experiment","tag-science","tag-top-stories","tag-travel","tag-trending","tag-trending-video","tag-twitter","tag-u0026","tag-video","tag-wildlife","tag-zoos
["GET
![]("https://www.newsbeep.com/nz/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/85510416007-screenshot-20250804-122153.jpg"/)
