Since stepping away from politics in January 2023, Jacinda Ardern has been filling her days with projects important to her. Photo \/ NZ Woman’s Weekly<\/p>\n
\u201cI wanted to be around that kind of innovation and optimism and to be a part of a platform for that because there\u2019s a lot to be disheartened by, especially in the climate space,\u201d Ardern says.<\/p>\n
Her other work includes a fellowship with Conservation International, which she recently finished, and a fellowship in empathetic leadership and politics. She is still the patron for the Christchurch Call To Action as well as other roles supporting women\u2019s health and wellbeing.<\/p>\n
It seems Ardern is still incredibly busy \u2013 but those Sunday nights?<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s completely different,\u201d she smiles. \u201cThen, things just had to be done. You couldn\u2019t say, \u2018I\u2019m tired tonight\u2019, or \u2018I\u2019ll do that another time\u2019. It was part of the schedule and you\u2019d work around it. Now, I prioritise in a different way, like having dinner with my family, or making dinner for my family.\u201d<\/p>\n
Sometimes, they\u2019ll watch a movie together.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re going through a phase of being like, \u2018Oh, why don\u2019t we watch that film we used to like when we were younger?\u2019 But some of them you can\u2019t go too early with,\u201d Ardern laughs. \u201cLike The Princess Bride \u2013 I forgot about the swamp rats!\u201d<\/p>\n
She also, fittingly for a children\u2019s book author, reads to Neve each night.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s an activity close to Ardern\u2019s heart. She grew up loving choose-your-own adventure books as well as Nancy Drew and The Babysitter\u2019s Club, and says the gift of reading, \u201copens up the world for children. You see it in a way you forget about or take for granted, but it\u2019s also the ability to escape that it provides\u201d.<\/p>\n
These days, while she still needs to read serious books such as those about violent online extremism, there\u2019s also room for novels. On her nightstand right now are Gabrielle Zevin\u2019s Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow, and before that, A Beautiful Family by New Zealand author Jennifer Trevelyan.<\/p>\n
But despite the massive life changes as she traverses new adventures and achievements, with Clarke and Neve by her side \u2013 and without that all-important briefcase \u2013 Ardern can\u2019t help but admit with a twinkle in her eye, \u201cI still tend to work in the evenings\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n
