File photo supplied<\/p>\n<p>New Zealand and Iceland are deepening co-operation in the areas of working holidays, taxation and geothermal energy, Foreign Minister Winston Peters has announced.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNew Zealand and Iceland may be oceans apart, but we are two island nations united by shared values,\u201d Peters said on October 23, during his visit to Iceland.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese initiatives constitute an important step towards enhancing New Zealand\u2019s cooperation with Iceland.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Following his meeting with Iceland\u2019s President Halla T\u00f3masd\u00f3ttir, Peters announced the two countries would start negotiations on a reciprocal Working Holiday Scheme.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA working holiday scheme with Iceland will create new opportunities for our young people to connect, collaborate, and contribute to each other\u2019s societies, and gain valuable international experience while enriching our communities and economies,\u201d Peters\u00a0says.<\/p>\n<p>Immigration Minister Erica Stanford adds: \u201cWorking Holiday Schemes enable young people to travel, study, and work in each other\u2019s countries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeyond individual benefits, a scheme with Iceland will also encourage reciprocal tourism and seasonal work in regional areas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Peters says through the Working Holiday Scheme, young Kiwis will be able to experience and learn from Iceland with its dynamic, world-leading, added-value economy.<\/p>\n<p>While in Reykjavik, he also signed a Double Tax Agreement with Iceland\u2019s Finance Minister, Da\u00f0i M\u00e1r Krist\u00f3fersson.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis Double Tax Agreement will strengthen economic cooperation between our two countries by providing clarity and fairness for businesspeople who operate across New Zealand and Iceland,\u201d Peters\u00a0says.<\/p>\n<p>He also visited Iceland\u2019s Nesjavellir Geothermal Power Station, with Energy Minister J\u00f3hann P\u00e1ll J\u00f3hannsson.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe New Zealand Government is investing in exploring the potential of supercritical geothermal energy in the Taup\u014d Volcanic Zone,\u201d Peters\u00a0says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGeothermal could help secure New Zealand\u2019s future energy needs, which is why it\u2019s critical that we learn from world leaders in this area like Iceland.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Peters is visiting Iceland as part of a wider visit to the Nordic region and he\u2019s also travelling to Norway, Denmark, Sweden and Finland.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Foreign Minister Winston Peters.
