CNN\u2019s Jake Tapper debunked Donald Trump\u2019s repeated claim that the price of groceries is now \u201cway down\u201d thanks to his administration.<\/p>\n
Tapper aired a montage of the president declaring as much over and over again.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo frequently repeated,\u201d Tapper said of Trump\u2019s claims. \u201cThose clips are just from the past two weeks alone.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cBut what are the facts?\u201d the anchor asked. \u201cNewly released inflation data shows that grocery prices are actually up again last month and have been on the rise since President Trump took office in January.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThe average price of groceries rose 0.3% from August to September,\u201d Tapper noted. \u201cOn average, grocery prices are about 1.4% higher than in January when President Trump took office, and they\u2019re 2.7% higher than they were at this point last year.\u201d<\/p>\n
Coffee is \u201cmost shockingly\u201d up by 18.9% with beef and veal up 14.7%, he added.<\/p>\n
Tapper acknowledged that \u201ceconomists say it\u2019s normal for grocery prices to rise over time.\u201d But Trump\u2019s signature policies of slamming tariffs on imported goods and cracking down on undocumented immigration \u201cwhich impacts many workers, especially in the agricultural industry, are certainly contributing to the spike, according to economists,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
