{"id":107174,"date":"2025-10-29T14:31:09","date_gmt":"2025-10-29T14:31:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/107174\/"},"modified":"2025-10-29T14:31:09","modified_gmt":"2025-10-29T14:31:09","slug":"the-court-theatre-completes-following-christchurch-earthquake","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/107174\/","title":{"rendered":"The Court Theatre completes following Christchurch earthquake"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Architecture studios <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/haworth-tompkins\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Haworth Tompkins<\/a> and Athfield Architects have completed The Court Theatre in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/new-zealand\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New Zealand<\/a>, wrapped by timber benches and large windows that create connections between its public and back-of-house areas.<\/p>\n<p>The completion of the 3,700-square-metre centre marks the return of The Court Theatre to the heart of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/christchurch\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Christchurch<\/a>, after it was forced to temporarily relocate to the suburbs following the city&#8217;s devastating <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/event\/Christchurch-earthquakes-of-2010-2011\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2011 earthquake<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2261632 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/haworth-tompkins-athfield-architects-the-court-theatre_dezeen_2364_col_1-852x424.jpg\" alt=\"Exterior view of The Court Theatre in Christchurch\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1176\"  \/>Haworth Tompkins and Athfield Architects have completed The Court Theatre in Christchurch<\/p>\n<p>Uniting all of the theatre&#8217;s production facilities under one roof, the building contains a 350-seat main auditorium and 150-seat studio alongside workshops for costume, prop, lighting and sound design, educational and community spaces and a public bar and cafe.<\/p>\n<p>Celebrating the return of the theatre to the city centre, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.haworthtompkins.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Haworth Tompkins<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/athfieldarchitects.co.nz\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Athfield Architects<\/a> looked to create a space that would embody a feeling of &#8220;openness, visibility, and connectivity,&#8221; facing the street with a triple height, timber-framed atrium.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2261642 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/haworth-tompkins-athfield-architects-the-court-theatre_dezeen_2364_col_10-852x558.jpg\" alt=\"Exterior view of arts venue by Haworth Tompkins and Athfield Architects\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1548\"  \/>The exterior is wrapped by timber benches and large windows<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This project has always been about more than just designing a building \u2013 it&#8217;s about helping to restore a cultural heart to \u014ctautahi Christchurch,&#8221; said Roger Watts, director at Haworth Tompkins.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Court Theatre is a producing house in the truest sense, and we wanted to create a building that celebrates that process: open, visible, alive with creativity, and deeply connected to its city,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2261635 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/haworth-tompkins-athfield-architects-the-court-theatre_dezeen_2364_col_4-852x658.jpg\" alt=\"Atrium interior at The Court Theatre by Haworth Tompkins and Athfield Architects\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1826\"  \/>It opens to a triple-height atrium<\/p>\n<p>The plan of the theatre is organised around its largest auditorium \u2013 the Stewart Family Theatre \u2013 which is wrapped by offices and workspaces to the northeast and production and educational facilities to the west.<\/p>\n<p>Built atop earthquake-resilient raft foundations of concrete, which were also used to acoustically isolate the central auditorium, the theatre was constructed from a combination of steel and timber that was left visible on both the interior and exterior.<\/p>\n<p>Facing Gregory Street to the south is The Gough Family Foyer, a triple-height gathering space framed by large timber beams and cross-bracing, organised around a copper bar and a steel staircase leading to the auditorium&#8217;s upper levels and first-floor studio areas.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/09\/24\/snohetta-st-louis-powell-hall-extension\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/st-louis-orchestra-snohetta_dezeen_2364_hero-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"St Louis Symphony Orchestra by Sn\u00f8hetta\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"  \/><\/p>\n<p> Sn\u00f8hetta completes arched extension to St Louis&#8217; Powell Hall\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>To the southwest, The Wakefield Family Front Room studio theatre is wrapped by blackout shutters that can be opened to daylight and views from Columbo Street, where a wide canopy and benches provide a space for passers-by to stop and rest.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Generous windows and sheltered external terraces aim to make the foyer feel porous, explicitly welcoming to all,&#8221; explained Watts.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2261651 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/haworth-tompkins-athfield-architects-the-court-theatre_dezeen_2364_col_19-852x828.jpg\" alt=\"Auditorium within arts venue by Haworth Tompkins and Athfield Architects\" width=\"2364\" height=\"2297\"  \/>The venue holds a 350-seat auditorium<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Windows on Columbo also provide glimpses into the scenery workshop at street level and into the wigs and costume workshop above, a rare example of craft and manufacturing alive in the city centre,&#8221;
