In 2023, Allison \u2014 who is the daughter of journalists Brian Williams and Jane Stoddard Williams \u2014 publicly weighed in on the viral \u201cnepo baby\u201d discourse<\/a>. She told Vulture<\/a>, \u201cTo not acknowledge that me getting started as an actress versus someone with zero connections isn\u2019t the same \u2014 it\u2019s ludicrous. It doesn\u2019t take anything away from the work that I\u2019ve done. It just means that it\u2019s not as fun to root for me.\u201d\"Brian<\/p>\n

Speaking with the outlet amid the release of her new film Regretting You, Allison was asked if she understood why people \u201chated\u201d her \u201cso much\u201d in the past. She replied, \u201cDeeply. First, the theater kid energy is triggering for a lot of people. There\u2019s a reason I don\u2019t sing regularly. I get to do it once a decade without it becoming too annoying.\u201d\"Allison<\/p>\n

\u201cThe other thing is, I have so many different layers of privilege that it\u2019s hard for me to put together the idea of a person it would be less fun to root for. I\u2019m much more satisfying to root against. I really get it. I really, really get it,\u201d she said.\"Allison<\/p>\n

\u201cI always have cared about what people think about me, I still do, but I can\u2019t begrudge people their reactions. I feel like it\u2019s changed though. Gen Z has a totally different read on Marnie. They have a much more charitable and warm feeling toward her,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n

For context, Allison opened up last year about how her onscreen Girls character was widely<\/a> viewed as \u201cannoying\u201d and \u201ccringeworthy\u201d<\/a> when the show aired between 2012 and 2017. \u201cMy theory is, what was coded as selfishness among millennials is now coded as self-care,\u201d she said<\/a>, referring to the way that Gen Z have embraced Marnie more favorably. \u201cJust being aware of what you need and advocating for your needs and standing up for yourself, and so Gen Z, is like, \u2018No, we get her. She makes sense to us.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Internet users have since praised Allison\u2019s \u201crefreshingly self-aware\u201d<\/a> comments. \u201cHer honest self-assessment is making me like her even more! That\u2019s all we want. Everyone loves a self-aware nepo baby- we can root for them even if we\u2019re doing it from a very unfair and unequal world,\u201d one person said<\/a>. Another added<\/a>, \u201cAllison Williams, they could never make me hate you.\u201d\"Allison<\/p>\n

\u201cBig fan of famous people acknowledging their layers of privilege,\u201d someone wrote<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s bizarre that it\u2019s taken the nepos this long to learn a proper response, but I love her awareness. And believe she is authentic,\u201d one more user agreed<\/a>.<\/p>\n
