Some prefer an early meal, while others might not be able to sit down to eat until later in the evening. Much of this is determined by schedule and lifestyle, not to mention the cultural norms where you live. In some countries, like Spain, dinner might not start until 9 p.m.

But is there a time that’s healthiest to eat dinner? While everybody’s energy levels are different, you can typically expect your metabolism to slow down as the day comes to a close.

“Metabolism tends to be at its highest during the day when you are most active and engaged in various physical and mental activities,” DeChatelets says. “In the evening, metabolism starts gradually slowing down as you transition toward more restful activities and prepare for sleep.”

The later you eat, the less your body metabolizes your food. And the impact it can have on your body is glaring. According to a 2022 study by researchers at Harvard Medical School, later meal times can deregulate appetite hormones in the body, which means you can still feel hungry even after having a full meal.

The Harvard researchers also found that, due to the body’s metabolic state later in the day, it burns calories more slowly after a late dinner. In addition, the way those calories are used is believed to trigger greater fat storage in the body than eating earlier in the day.

“Consistently eating a large meal too close to bedtime can also contribute to metabolic imbalances and difficulty managing weight, as the body is more likely to store calories as fat when not being used for energy,” DeChatelets says.

How Does Your Dinner Time Affect Sleep Quality?

Beyond its impact on your digestion, a late dinner can also affect the quality of your sleep. In fact, there are many factors at play that can mess with your beauty sleep. Eating foods that are high in sugar or carbohydrates, for example, can alter your blood sugar levels throughout the night, alter your energy levels, and keep you awake when you’re trying to sleep.

If you have problems with acid reflux or struggle to digest certain foods, some ingredients can upset your stomach late at night and make it harder to get a full eight hours. “Going to bed with a full stomach or abdominal discomfort due to eating certain foods can make it difficult to fall asleep and stay asleep, leading to fragmented and poor-quality sleep,” DeChatelets says.

Despite these issues, Manaker says that eating late isn’t always problematic. “For some individuals, a light snack before bed can actually support sleep by stabilizing blood sugar and providing nutrients like tryptophan or magnesium, which are known to promote relaxation.”

When Should You Eat Dinner?

“There is no universal ‘best’ time to eat dinner, as it depends on your personal schedule, hunger cues, and lifestyle,” Manaker says. She advises eating when you’re hungry and focusing on both what you’re eating and portion size.

DeChatelets has a more specific answer: eat at least 3 hours before bedtime. Allowing your body to fully digest a meal before you sleep means your system can spend more time recovering through the night instead of focusing on digestion.

But what happens if you end up with a late-night restaurant reservation? And what happens when your dinner plans get delayed? Thankfully, you don’t need to stress. Harvard researchers note that the health- and weight-related impacts of late dinners are cumulative—so a late dinner every once in a while is not the end of the world.

DeChatelets echoes their sentiments: “This doesn’t mean you should completely skip your meal or stay awake longer than normal if you end up eating one or two hours before bed from time to time. However, aiming to eat a smaller portion may be a good idea in this circumstance.”

There are plenty of strategies you can use to improve the overall quality of your digestion. Enjoying balanced meals and staying hydrated are the foundations of a good diet. Keeping your body moving certainly doesn’t hurt, either. “Simply chewing your food well and relaxing at mealtimes promotes optimal digestion,” DeChatelets says.

More On Health & Nutrition

Eating dinner late isn’t always unhealthy, but it can affect your metabolism and digestion when done consistently.Late meals…

[36
79679,14297,2946,5818,564,134,79678,111,139,556,69,79680,79681
0":"post-111329","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-nutrition","8":"tag-best-time-to-eat-dinner","9":"tag-digestion","10":"tag-dinner","11":"tag-eating","12":"tag-food","13":"tag-health","14":"tag-hilma","15":"tag-new-zealand","16":"tag-newzealand","17":"tag-nutrition","18":"tag-nz","19":"tag-when-should-i-eat-dinner","20":"tag-when-to-eat-dinner
["GET
